20 is plenty say neighbours

Hundreds of people have signed a petition to make Berkhamsted a 20mph town in a bid to clamp-down on speeding motorists.

More than 300 people have put their name to a petition launched by The Berkhamsted and Tring Cycling Campaign (BTCC).

The group, which is committed to promoting the use of cycling as a healthy and eco-friendly mode of transport, will present the petition to the Herts Highways and Transport Panel on Tuesday.

BTCC Chairman, Tim Vaughan, said: "I have had some near misses and some of the roads are quite narrow with cars parked on both sides. It seems to make a lot of sense to reduce the risk of accidents not just for cyclists, but for pedestrians and drivers.

"This is not going to mean lots of speed bumps and speed cameras. There will be more signs put up and possibly portable vehicle-activated signs."

BTCC was inspired to launch its bid to slow motorist down by the national campaigns 20's Plenty and The Slower Speeds Initiative.

Mr Vaughan said: "Numerous towns and cities have introduced widespread 20mph speed limits and seen noticeable improvements in road safety and other benefits."

Berkhamsted Town Council is also looking a speed limits in the area.

Councillor Julie Laws said the Berkhamsted and Northchurch Transport Plan working party, which had looked at the possibility of pedestrianising the town between Kings Road and Chesham Road before ruling it out, said: "We are singing from the same hymn sheet.

"I think it is a good idea to encourage drivers to give more consideration to the area they are passing through and it is proven that injuries are reduced by reduced speed.

"We get a lot of concerns from residents about the speed of people going along the roads. I think the benefits will be encouraging drivers to give more consideration to our area and more consideration to pedestrians and other road users.

Herts County Council refused to comment on the petition until it has gone before the Herts Highways and Transport Panel on Tuesday.
