A recreation of the nativity scene made entirely out of balloons has turned a Hemel- based balloon artist into a TV award winner.

The producers of Kirstie’s Allsopp’s Christmas programmes for Channel 4 scoured the country for the best Christmas craftspeople.

Among those chosen was Lisa Dussek, who set up her balloon business, inspiredballoons.co.uk, just two years ago.

Lisa went on to win first prize in the Best Handmade Christmas Tableau competition, with a cast of nine balloon characters, four cheeky sheep, and fruiting palmtrees under a star-filled sky.

Lisa was pitted against top crafters in wicker, needle-felting and Lego construction, to create an eye-catching festive scene which showed what Christmas means to them.

The tableaux, each one installed on a 6ft tressle table, were judged on ‘wow factor’, design, originality and skill.

Lisa was presented her award, a wooden artist’s mannequin holding a miniature Christmas tree and stocking, in the grounds of Kirstie’s country home in Devon.

Lisa said: “My aim was to create a heart warming nativity scene, framed by the Star of Bethlehem at the top connected to two fruiting palm trees which formed an arch over the entire scene. I tried to bring as much life and character into the individuals as possible.”
