KETTLES across the borough were flicked on as offices and homes geared up for the World’s Biggest Coffee morning.

Attention to detail was paid as brews were made and lovingly home-baked delights were unwrapped for the annual Macmillan event.

Charity supporters in Dacorum joined others across the globe to host fundraisers involving the supping of coffee and the eating of cake.

Staff at Bonmarche in Hemel Hempstead introduced a competitive side to their coffee morning, asking customers to choose their favourite cake from treats colleagues had cooked up.

Shoppers were spoilt with carrot cake, Victoria sponge and butterfly cupcakes but Julie Harland’s bread and butter pudding came out tops. They raised £70 on Friday morning.

Karen Waylett’s first coffee morning was a hit, with workers from neighbouring businesses and friends popping in to support the cause.

Karen, who works at Keer-Keer & Co solicitors in Bank Court, Hemel Hempstead, decided to arrange the event following her mum’s sudden death less than two months ago after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

The generosity of coffee and tea fans meant Karen raked in £187.50 with the help of colleagues who baked cakes for the event.

“It was so easy,” said Karen. “There is a really nice bunch of people here so everyone mucked in.”

Meanwhile, a coffee morning established five years ago in Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead, is now something of a community get together.

A total of £400 was raised by visitors to St Mary and St Joseph Church Hall in St John’s Road.

It beat last year’s haul of £308. “Every year we try to do better and better,” said organiser Victoria Sorzano.

She first hosted the event believing it a worthwhile cause but has since suffered the loss of friends to cancer making it a charity close to her heart.

During the event, coffee was provided by Smiths Coffee Company in Ebberns Road, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead and local business people ran stalls.

Directors took over the job of making tea and coffee for one day only at Hightown Praetorian and Churches Housing Association.

They served up cakes, muffins and toast with jam alongside hot drinks at the firm’s offices in Maylands Avenue, Hemel Hempstead.

The bosses collected more than £200 for charity.

Finance operations manager Sarah King said: “Some of the staff were amazed they had to sit down at tables and be waited on by their boss.

“But it was a great atmosphere and they soon got used to the idea of clicking their fingers for service.”

Church member Sheila Keane created a rocky road cake for the coffee morning she hosted on Saturday.

It was the forth year Sheila has organised the get together at the Church of the Resurrection in Henry Wells Square, Grovehill, Hemel Hempstead.

With the help of church members, who baked cakes, and businesses who donated prizes for a raffle, the event raised £327.50.
