A social group for the elderly and disabled set up by the Red Cross six decades ago has celebrated its landmark anniversary with a tea party.

Members of the Happy Wanderers Club, which began in Berkhamsted in 1956, say their name means they are often mistaken for a rambling club.

But club secretary Jean Warrilow says the name goes right back to when Mabel
Lasham, a well-known face in the Berkhamsted community, set it up in collaboration with the Red Cross.

The team of carers happily ‘wandered’ between the homes of those who were housebound through age or disability.

Mrs Warrilow, who has been involved with the club since 1991, said: “I only met Mabel once or twice but she struck me as a woman who got things done!

“The club had no set meeting place so they moved between houses, and were happy doing it – hence the name.”

The club, which is now independent from the Red Cross, has settled in Potten End Village Hall, meeting 20 times a year.

The group of 32 members enjoy a programme of speakers and activities, such as
nostalgic memory boxes, as well as trips out in the local area.

The 60th birthday party was chance to say thank you to local organisations that have supported the club in the past, including the Inner Wheel, Berkhamsted Lions, the Berkhamsted Bulbourne Rotary Club, Waitrose and Berkhamsted Bowls Club.

The Wanderers rely on volunteer drivers to transport members to and from Potten End, as well as on occasional trips out, so if you could spare a few hours on a Monday, email Barbara Bonwitt on [email protected]
