A man-made mountain with real snow slopes for skiers and boarders is now open in Hemel Hempstead.

The Snow Centre, a state-of-the-art facility off St Albans Hill, took months of expert labour and 23million to build.

And today (Wednesday), after weeks of anticipation among UK ski bums and snowboarders, its indoor runs of pure white stuff are finally open to the public.

Stephen Jordan, technical director of The Snow Centre, said: "We are delighted to be opening our doors for the first time.

"The Snow Centre is truly a premier destination in the UK for the very best in training, recreational snowsports and family fun."

• The Gazette is also pleased to announce the winners of The Snow Centre competition launched last month.

Polly Bresnett from Hemel Hempstead and Elizabeth Elliot of Berkhamsted will each receive a year's free membership to the new state-of-the-art facility, plus five lift passes for free sessions and a free ski or snowboard lesson.
