The Berkhamsted Citizens Association May 28

The last of the current season of talks was given by Alan Verney, the chief Retained Fire Officer in Berkhamsted for many years who spoke on The Berkhamsted Fire Brigade since 1886.

Recently retired, Mr Verney took us through the history of firefighting, and in particular how it developed in this town.

It became particularly important in the Victorian era as the town was host to chemical works, wood yards and furniture factories.

His personal collection of records, equipment and uniforms well-illustrated his colourful stories, all underpinned by the seriousness of his message.

But the highlight of the evening was a previously unannounced visit by the current 'Watch' complete with breathing apparatus, which made them look like something out of Dr Who!

They spent the coffee break signing us all up to having a fire protection inspection of our homes, to keep us up to scratch with fire and smoke alarms. So what could have been just a local history lecture turned out to be something eminently practical and relevant.
