Seen a black squirrel?

Has anyone seen a black squirrel in the Hemel Hempstead area this year?

National newspaper reports at the weekend (April 26/27) report that the black squirrel could wipe out the common grey squirrel in a few years.

Black squirrels, a genetic mutation of the grey, were first sighted in this country early in the 20th century and are common around the Cambridgeshire area and in parts of East Hertfordshire. They are said to be more agressive than the grey squirrel.

One (or it may have been a couple) caused quite a stir in the Boxmoor area of Hemel Hempstead in the 1990s over several months, but Hemeltoday and The Gazette have not heard of any more recent sightings!

So we're asking readers to keep their eyes open and let us know if they site a black squirrel in this area over the coming weeks and months.
