Red kite over Hemel
Have you seen a red kite flying over Hemel Hempstead?
Updates in April
Kitty
Hello, I thought I'd email an update about Red Kites in our area. Since my 1st comment about a kite that was eyeing up my pet rabbit in the Bennetts End/Apsley area (ages ago), my husband and I have been on the lookout for these majestic birds. In the last month, I have seen a pair flying over the A41 between Bourne End and Berko, as well as a couple in the Ashley Green area, one flying above Berkhamstead Road in Chesham and another one near Leavesden. I have been told by my husband that he regularly sees them in Princes Risborough (up to 8 at a time!!) but this is probably due to the location in which they were re-introduced to the Chilterns. We also see Kestrels, Buzzards and the occasional Sparrow Hawk puts in an appearance.
Photos are a rare opportunity due to the fact that we are usually driving when we see them!

Stella Webb from Hemel Hempstead
I saw what I believe to be a red kite today (31 March) whilst I was driving through Studham.
Tony Hayward, Hunters Close, Bovingdon
We frequently watch the Red Kites flying over Bovingdon and yesterday the 17th March 2009 we saw what presumably was a family of three who entertained us for appromimately an hour. We later saw a lone red kite that was just gliding for what appeared to be miles, absolutely spectacular.

We were walking across kings field from adeyfield on 28th february and as we got halfway down on the path, we were lucky enough to see the red kite dive bombing a crow about 15m in front of us! the crows made a rapid exit for the kite to circle over the field for about 20mins!there were no other birds not even a sound (all in hiding!) couldnt believe we were only people who saw it there that day it was a beautiful bird of prey an looked awesome!! so course when we read your article on had anyone spotted it we had to write in!!
From Katy
I saw a red kite over Potten End village when I was driving through with my dad.
We also get them over our playground at Potten End School sometimes if we are lucky. I have only seen them over the playground once before.
I went on a walk with my family the other day in Bledlow and we saw lots of them there; you can see them very close up.

St Agnells Lane, Hemel Hempstead
I saw a red kite flying over St. Agnells Lane today 8th March 2009, at about 3.20 to 3.30 pm, fighting against the strong wind. It was a real pity I didn't have my camera handy.

Very good sighting, today Saturday 24th Jan 09 around midday, of a Red Kite on the east side of the A5183 St Albans Road, just north of The Pre restaurant. It was circling over a field. I'm very certain of what I saw as I am very familar with seeing them on M40 between junctions 4 & 7, but have also seen as close to London as junction 2!
Mrs Fink, Grovehill
Majestic Red Kite seen soaring and circling over Grovehill on Sunday 4th Jan and Sunday 11th Jan 2009, must have been over the shops. Feared for my free range bunnies Mr Chips and Billie!
Michaela Biggerstaff
Red Kite spotted in back garden between St Margarets Close and Hillside Gardens, trying to dive bomb 2 crows on 1st Jan 2009, then again on 3rd Jan 2009.

From Nicola ManchesterWOW!
We caught our first glimpse of a red kite in Hemel this weekend whilst driving along the B487 from Hemel towards Redbourn.
It was circling over the fields to the left of the road at about 9.00am on Sunday 21st December.
That's the first time we have seen a red kite in this area - hopefully not the last!

From: David Lane, Tring
A Red Kite was spotted flying above Christchurch Rd in Tring on Sunday 14th December 2008 just before lunch heading towards the Reservoirs. My Observer Book of birds last used in 1968 came to my rescue as I knew that it was bigger than the usual bird of prey and it had the forked tail.

Wow, what an amazing bird, today I got my first look at a Red Kite.
I was driving past the Red Lion just before Water End, it was circling over the tall trees. What a treat!!
Also saw what looked like a young Barn Owl perched on phone/electricity wires just after the one way bridge further up the A4146 (nearly crashed the car....oops).
Regular sitings include a Buzzard in Dagnall, and hovering Kestrels over the fields at various points on my way home from Hemel to Linslade.
From: Kitty:
I disturbed a Red Kite last year which was sitting on my garden wall, eyeing up my free-range pet rabbit as a potential dinner (he is quite chubby).
I opened the back door and heard a scraping of talons on stone as it took off. It was definately a Kite and we (Hubby saw it too) were amazed to see it.
We also had an unusual visitor (see photo in gallery, right) in our garden the Summer before ('06) in the shape of a Barn Owl which terrified the cats (sensible - they refused to go out. Then I saw why!). It flew onto a nearby roof where it was hassled for over half an hour by a very noisy and courageous Blackbird. (see attached pic) The most amazing thing about both bird sightings is that I live in the (very built up)Apsley/Bennetts End area of Hemel.

Views: After visiting Waddesdon Manor in Bucks recentley, and getting a glimpse of the Red Kite birds flying close by,you can imagine my excitement when i looked out of my loft window the other afternoon and spotted one flying overhead.I was so chuffed to think they are becoming more common over Hemel Hempstead.Infact, two days later my husband who is a GreenKeeper in Hemel spotted one overhead, unfortunatley it was being bothered by a crow, its a shame that we are not all happy to see them around!!!

I live in Grovehill near to the woods and fields and I see the red kites regularly. I have actually seen one in my garden three times (last year), once eating a sparrow and twice eating pigeons. They don't seem to worry about you standing there watching them. They are pretty big and a fantastic sight to see in your back garden.
Hi we saw a red kite circling over our back garden in New Park Drive on 31st March. It was eventually chased off by some seagulls.
The Hall family.
I saw a red kite over Great Gaddesden yesterday, near Wyevale Garden
Centre, and took my wife back to see it again today. It was soaring near a buzzard that also seems to live in the area. I took this photo with my 400 mm zoom lens but it's not very distinct.

How the sightings began last year:
Sue Keen emailed Hemeltoday on Monday to say: My husband and I saw a red kite flying over our house on Woodhall Farm this morning.
"These birds were released into the Chilterns in the early 1990s and have bred very successfully in and around the Thames Valley area, with some 100 pairs being accounted for.
"They have been seen over Tring reservoirs but this is the first time we have spotted one over Hemel Hempstead. They are very distinctive, with a fox red body and grey head and a 5-6 feet wingspan with white markings on the under side. They can sometimes be mistaken for a buzzard but they have a forked tail rather than the buzzard's rounded tail."

YOUR SIGHTINGS
April 17: Yes, I saw a pair of red kites soaring the skies across the valley from Chaulden while visiting my sister on Sunday at about 2.30pm. They flew towards Bovingdon, circling on the thermals. Sadly, too far away for a good photo.
I saw a red kite beside the by-pass between Berkhamsted and Bourne End about a month ago. It was flying down to the ground and its wings were enormous and then I saw a pair circling near Bourne End a few days later. Fantastic sight!
My wife & I saw 5 red kites at around 12.30 on Monday 9th for about 5 minutes. They were on the outskirts of Woodhall Farm high in the sky. I. Adams
I live in Leverstock Green and this week, especially today a flock of four red kites have been killing pigeons and blackbirdsnear my back garden. Scattered across the grassare headless birds left bythe kites.I never knew birds hunted together in large numbers andcould move so swiftly. I will try to get a picture if they are still around. Yours faithfully Mark Fletcher
