Police drop charges against G20 protester
An anti capitalism campaigner who took part in the G20 protests has had charges of impersonating a police officer against him dropped.
David Vannen, of Upper Highway in Abbots Langley, was among a group of protesters who drove an armoured car into central London dressed in blue overalls and wearing helmets as a stunt last year.
Mr Vannen, aged 38, and 10 other members of the group Space Hijackers were arrested and later charged with impersonating the police.
The group's six-wheeled Alvis Saracen was driven into the City during the G20 economic summit on April 1 with Ride of the Valkyries blasting from the stereo.
"The vehicle looked utterly ridiculous," Mr Vannen, a freelance media creative, said.
"If that's an attempt to impersonate the police you have to wonder what sort of police cars people are expecting to see."
However, the police did not see the funny side and the group - who describe themselves as the 'laughing cavaliers of anti capitalism' - was arrested and spent a day in custody before being charged.
The Space Hijackers pleaded not guilty but a week before their trial was due to start on February 8 the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all the charges.
