Places of interest: Tring's Rothschild Mansion

Historian at the Arts Educational School in Tring, Mark Amess, takes Hemeltoday on a tour of the former Rothschild home.

The mansion, which is now the school's main building, was sold to Baron Lionel Rothschild in 1872 for 230,000.

The house was enlarged to hold many guests, including King Edward VII as Prince of Wales, Gladstone while prime minister and Lord Rosebery, who were all friends of the Rothschild family.

With the outbreak of war in 1939 the house became the wartime home of the Rothschild Bank.

The Arts Educational School then came to Tring in 1945 and purchased the freehold of the house in 1970.
