Inner Wheel Club of Berkhamsted Bulbourne June 04

An enjoyable evening combining 'Call my Bluff' and wine tasting was held in the Civic Centre on Saturday hosted by the Inner Wheel Club of Berkhamsted Bulbourne.

During the evening a selection of wines from local shops were tasted by the 120 guests present.

A knowledgeable team of three wine buffs then tried to make the audience believe each of their explanations was the correct one.

Each table then made their choice and voted. The scores were recorded on stage by Nova Strange and the winning table at the end of the evening was rewarded with of course, bottles of wine.

The evening was a great success thanks to Barbara Bonwitt and Rosemary Hoskin and their team who also provided a delicious ploughman's supper.

A raffle with prizes again provided by local shops and businesses raised a large sum of money and this with the proceeds from the wine tasting all went to Breakthrough Breast Cancer, one of the charities President Barbara Howells has chosen to support this year.

Also during the year the club has been collecting Joy, Toy and Roy bags and baby bundles for developing countries.

The Joy, Toy and Roy bags provide a 'little extra' for men, women and children where very little is available.

Each drawstring bag is filled with small gifts donated by friends, neighbours and family. Many of the items provided need not be brand new and most can be found around the home.

Joy bags for the ladies, Roy bags for the men and Toy bags for the children.

Anything from shampoo, lipstick and jewellery to combs, socks and aftershave to balls, crayons and toy cars are divided into the appropriate bags.

The baby bundles contain nappies, creams, baby clothes, towels, soap – anything useful for a young baby.

Our overseas chairman Jenny Chant has done a splendid job organising them and taking them to the depot from where they will be distributed.

The club has also supported the Wheelchair Foundation UK this year.

This is an independent charitable organisation with a goal to deliver a wheelchair to every child and adult worldwide who needs one but cannot afford one.

This way they can regain their independence having been deprived of mobility by war, disease, accident, natural disaster and advanced age.

These wheelchairs have been designed to be the best possible solution in developing countries – lightweight and hardwearing and have changed lives dramatically.

Instead of having to crawl along the ground, be carried by relatives or even stay in bed for years they are able to go to school, get a job and join in family activities once again.

The club now has a membership of 42 ladies. As well as raising money for our chosen charities we also enjoy many social occasions including a recent enjoyable visit to Askott House and gardens near Wing.
