Hats off to The Paper Trail
Hundreds turned out to support The Paper Trail at the charity's Summer Fayre.
Arts and crafts, paper making and boat trips on the canal were among the attractions that drew the crowds to Apsley on Sunday. (June 28)
People had the opportunity to don the special hats - folded from a single sheet of paper - that historically paper-makers used to wear as they worked.
But what proved particularly popular were trips aboard The Bryan Donkin, named after the engineer who developed the first paper-making machine at Frogmore Mill.
However, the charity is still struggling to stay solvent in the face of the credit crunch and is appealing for vital financial support, despite a 25,000 gift from a mystery donor.
The Paper Trail is aiming to raise 1million with a charity bond issue, which has raised 30,000 so far.
Chief executive Jacky Bennett said she expected the weekend event to raise around 1,000.
"We want people to know we're still here – we're still keeping going," she said.
"At the moment we're still operating on a week to week basis.
"We need big investors to help preserve what is the nation's history."
