Harbour Lights Snorkelling Club June 04

Eighteen members from Harbour Lights Snorkelling Club (HLSC) spent the sunny weekend snorkelling and learning about coast erosion in Dorset.

The club members between seven and 15 years of age arrived on Friday night at the camp site in Swanage, tents were put up, a new experience for most of them.

After a hot drink a night was spent under canvas. On Saturday the first part of the day was spent snorkelling in the bay; a lot of marina life was discovered. Lunch was eaten, then a walk along the shore of the bay where a fossil hunt was on and Sue Judge gave a talk on fossils and coast erosion.

Early afternoon was spent snorkelling in and out of the kelp. Then a ride on Harbour Lights Scuba Diving boat, the girls screamed, the boys tried to look cool. The kit and equipment was put into the van. Then a drive back to Swanage for dinner.

Richard took them all for a swim in the heated pool on the camp site. Hot drinks then bed. Not a peep out of them all night.

Sunday morning 8am breakfast. 9 30am Swanage sea front. By 10am they were snorkelling around towards the old pier. The rock pools were a fascination for all.

1pm lunch was had, then back to the camp site. Packing up the tents, lead to a bit of sulking. Questions such as, why do we have to go home, why can't we stay for another day, when can we come again? Lisa Harland the club's leader said all the talking stopped about a mile outside the camp site as most of them were asleep.

Their next weekend away will be in June helping the Kimmeridge Marine Wildlife Reserve make a study of some of the marine life within Kimmeridge Bay.

Harbour Lights Snorkelling Club received a grant from the LAA of 5,000. The Club meets every Thursday night at 7pm at Dacorum Sports Centre. New members are always welcome.
