Duo make Miss England final
An aspiring model has won a place in the Miss England final, giving Hemel Hempstead its second entrant in the national beauty contest.
Performing arts student Bijou Bond was crowned with her tiara after storming a regional heat sponsored by skincare brand Pharmaclinix.
The 19-year-old beauty, of Stratford Way, Hemel Hempstead, said: "I've never taken part in a modelling competition so it was a whole new experience for me.
"I really enjoyed all of it and made a lot of friends.
"Because of my university course I'm used to performing in front of people so I didn't have too much of a problem with nerves, but when I won I was in shock for about an hour."
Bijou, who studies at De Montfort University in Leicester, was encouraged to enter the contest after modelling for a bridal magazine.
She will join Miss Hertfordshire winner Amy Green, pictured right, at the country's most famous beauty pageant in Birmingham on September 1.
The girls – Hemel Hempstead's first entries into the Miss England competition – will be up against a further 58 contestants.
Amy, 21, of Marsons Road, was awarded her place after coming top in the county's regional final in May.
Amy, who took up modelling after winning a competition in a nightclub, is also a director of the telecoms firm she set up with her father.
The winner of the Miss England final will represent the country in the famous Miss World pageant.
