Do you feel safe in Hemel?

Do you feel safe on the streets of Hemel Hempstead, especially at night?

That's the question we're asking in the latest Hemeltoday online vote.

There have been some tragic events in other parts of the country in the last few weeks.

However, figures show crime in Hertfordshire as a whole fell during the year 2006/7, although as reported on Hemeltoday last month crimes of 'violence against the person' in Hertfordshire rose by four per cent.

So what is your perception of Hemel Hempstead? Do you feel safe going out at night?

Views: My parents came to Hemel in the late 1950s - like many others who set up home in the new towns. It's now unrecognisable from the town I grew up in. Gangs of arrogant youths - and often younger, hang around shops and parks. Drinking and drug-taking is rife in children as young as ten and they quite simply have no respect for either their elders or more worryingly, the law. Not that the law is in evidence much - apart from the 'pretend' policemen who have no powers of arrest or detainment (and don't the yobs know it). I'm a tall and heavily built man but I don't feel safe in most parts of this god-forsaken place and I worry constantly for the safety of my children.

Views: No, I don't feel safe on the streets of hemel, there are a lot of rough people about at the moment, I won't go anywhere without a friend...

Views: I have noticed changes in the highfield area over the last couple of years even more at bellgate shops as children between ages of 12 and 17 hanging around shops day and night intimadating elderley people, giving verbal abuse to people passing by and bullying children of all ages and stealing from them.

when will this all stop, where are the police these days they seem to turn a blind eye to it all, i have had a couple of run inns with these people myself, and they give you so much abuse you feel like putting your hand across there mouth, but who would be in the wrong me, it would be me who gets arrested and they will just carry on as normal.when will things finally change to remove the scum of the streets. like i say the oldest of these gangs are about 17yrs old what happens when they are in ther 20's how violent will things be then as they wasnt stopped at an early age.

Views: I feel safe walking in Hemel. It's well lit and as long as you stick to roads not alleys at all, it's fine even at 3am. I do not feel safe walking in somewhere like Watford or Luton though, at all.
