Dacorum U3A June 04
In our meeting at The Playhouse, Boxmoor we were given a very enlightening talk on Annie Sullivan.
She was born in Ireland and emigrated as a child with her family to the USA.
Whilst still at school at the age of 16 she became a Pupil Teacher and went on to become Helen Keller's teacher.
Helen Keller became famous throughout the world as the first deaf and blind person to graduate from University and her struggle to overcome her handicaps and succeed in many areas of life was an inspiration to millions.
What is less known is the pivotal roll Annie Sullivan played in her life. Louise Reed brought this story to life in a dramatic manner.
At a packed meeting in Berkhamsted Town Hall, Suzanne Carr, the eminent art historian from Oxford University, talked about the pictures which had inspired her passion for art.
Her talk was illustrated with slides and took us on a tour of European art galleries and paintings from the Renaissance period to the Impressionists.
