Couple go mobile for trip of a lifetime

A lot of people dream of just relaxing at home when they retire - but one Pimlico couple have decided to swap their house for a motor home and take the trip of a lifetime.

Jon and Sue Gross, both now retired, are hitting the road for a year to travel from North to South America.

And they are set to report for The Gazette every fortnight with news on their adventure from Canada to Argentina.

Sue, an ex-family lawyer, said: "We're excited mainly, but a little bit apprehensive – mostly about leaving all our children and all our friends."

The pair's plan is to fly to Denver on Friday (July 3) to collect their second-hand motor home – a 28ft-long 'Gulf Stream'.

After fitting the vehicle out with bedding, furniture and kitchenware, they are then set to head north to Canada, and later to Alaska – weather permitting.

From the top of North America the couple will then travel south to Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Death Valley and towns in Nevada, before arriving for Christmas in Boulder, Colorado – home to Jon's daughter, Deborah.

When the festive holiday is finished, Jon and Sue will set off again for Mexico, and then on to Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

Then it's further south to Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and finally, Argentina.

Jon said: "The plan is to sell the motor home and fly back, although we could ship it to South Africa and travel up from there!"

Sue, a former newspaper reporter who is set to write the bi-monthly reports for The Gazette from the road, added: "We want to be able to go with the flow a bit.

"If something takes our fancy we want to be able to go and see it."

Read the first chapter of Sue and Jon's story from the road in next week's Gazette.
