Chiltern Humanists June 18

Pepper Harow, the British Humanist Association's Social Cohesion Officer, addressed Chiltern Humanists' meeting on June 10.

She described how the BHA was encouraging members of Humanist groups throughout the country to contact local government with the aim of persuading it to involve the non-religious in local matters as much as 'faith groups'.

Over 200 members had been trained and were approaching the senior staff of their local councils.

The government was increasingly trying to involve faith groups in matters usually considered to be its own responsibility, thus discriminating against the non-religious.

Many inter-faith groups were funded by the state, but refused membership to Humanists, contrary to equality legislation, which refers to 'faith or belief'.
