Case of stranded ducklings quacked

Nine ducklings aged just a day old had to be rescued after taking a wrong turn.

The RSPCA spent two hours rescuing the litter from a weir on River Park, Hemel Hempstead, last Monday (June 29).

Having made their way there from the River Gade, the current was too strong for them to escape on their own and therewas no land for thestranded birds to get onto.

A resident heard the ducks' distressed quacking and contacted the RSPCA for help.

Animal collection officers (ACOs) Sarah Lambert and Peter Greene arrived on the scene and managed to fish the ducklings from the water and return them to the river.

The young birds then began to call and their mother flew down to join them.

ACO Lambert said: "Although the weir is fenced off we managed to get onto the bank and lower nets for the ducklings.

"We have rescued geese from the weir in the past and there are barriers to stop birds from getting in, but they duck (excuse the pun!) underneath for food."
