Escaped prisoner arrested after an hour on the run

A prisoner who escaped from The Mount in Bovingdon this morning (Thursday, May 26) has been arrested and detained by police.

The 36-year-old went missing at 9.30am but was arrested and detained by officers in Bovingdon at 10.41am.

This was after a manhunt involving the police helicopter, which circled the area to locate the escaped convict.

He is now in police custody.

A prison service spokesman said: “Staff from HMP The Mount swiftly detained a prisoner who had escaped from custody.

“The prisoner will now be transferred to a high security prison and could face additional charges.

“We are continuing to work closely with the police and prison staff to investigate the incident.

“Escapes from prison custody remain extremely rare but we take each one incredibly seriously - including the constant reassessment of security.

“Public protection remains our top priority.”
