Andrew John Lane, 22, of Stoney Avenue, Northchurch, appeared at St Albans Crown Court on Tuesday, July 28 where he admitted to causing death by careless driving and also using a vehicle without insurance.

Fazan Ahmed, 16, was struck by a vehicle on Jupiter Drive, Highfield, Hemel Hempstead, at around 8.25pm on August 22 last year.

He was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in London but died of his injuries two days later.

The tragedy devastated the family of the popular Adeyfield School pupil, who had collected his GCSE results just three days before he died.

The Arsenal football fan planned to take business, economics and possibly history and citizenship for his A Levels before going on to study business or economics at university in the future.

At the time, Adeyfield School headteacher Scott Martin said: “Fazan was very popular and had a very broad range of friends.

“The day before, they would have been celebrating and within 24 hours they have lost one of their dearest friends. This is truly a tragedy.

“He was a young man who had his whole future in front of him.

Mr Martin said Fazan’s mother Izzy Begum and father Mukhtar Ahmed had brought Fazan and his siblings up to be ‘decent people’.

A memorial page was set up on Facebook, RIP Fazan Ahmed, in wake of the tragedy where his friends and family posted messages and photos in tribute to the 16-year-old.

Andrew John Lane was disqualified from driving immediately and is due to appear in court again on Wednesday, August 26 for sentencing.
