Social media warnings about suspected bank card cloning have raised fears the fraudulent practice may be resumed in Dacorum after a spate of incidents last year.
The worries relate to the cashpoint at The Denes shopping arcade in Hemel Hempstead’s Barnacres Road. Facebook user Sally Masson posted to the 1,356 members of the Hemel Hempstead Community & Conversation page: “Following on from a post on my own wall, it seems there is a lot of card cloning going on at the cashpoint at The Denes, just be careful, make sure there is no skimmer lurking and no-one hovering behind you when you draw cash from any card machines.”
A police warning was issued to cashpoint users last year after a card-cloning device was found attached to an ATM in Stoneycroft.
The gadget was discovered in the Warners End shopping precinct and those who had used the ATM at the time were urged to contact their bank.
Concerns were also raised that the crime was becoming widespread in Tring just months later, as a number of cashpoint users saw hundreds of pounds stolen from their accounts, with many saying cash was being withdrawn in Colombia.
Following the events last year, cash machine network LINK joined forces with Crimestoppers to offer monetary rewards for information about cashpoint crime.
Herts Police were approached about the alleged Barnacres Road card cloning but spokesman Giles Cooper said: “There have been no reported incidents of that nature in this area. Regardless it is still important for members of the public to be safe when using their bank cards .
“ Never disclose your PIN to anyone, always look around you when approaching and using the cash point and if you see anyone acting suspiciously call police or a bank official.
“If you think a cash machine has been tampered with call police immediately and inform the bank, and, where possible, use a cash machine inside a bank or building society.”
Call the police non-emergency number 101 with information.
