It’s not just in its vast music catalogue that Radio Dacorum is keen to build up its stock of golden oldies – manager Matt Hatton is also recruiting venerable voice talent to join the station’s diverse team.
After successfully adding young mums and teenagers to the roster, Matt is now determined to build a new daytime slot aimed at those in their golden years.
With yummy mummies, under 25s and middle aged rockers all present and correct, he is aiming to find silver surfers who want to step up to the microphone.
No experience is required as full training will be given to the lucky candidate.
Matt said: ‘’You don’t have to be a technical whizz kid, just so long as you know how to turn a computer on and can talk the hindleg off a donkey.’’
He did some market research with members of his target audience as they played dominoes at Gadebridge’s Centre in the Park during a recent morning session.
So what would appeal to the older generation?
Sprightly 77 year old Derek Norman laughed at the thought of listening to punk band The Sex Pistols but said that some modern music was all right. Fellow domino player Kate Hollimand, 74, said ‘’I like band music and James Last, sometimes a nice softer sound for when I want a snooze’’.
But it is not just music, those questioned said they would like to talk about Hemel Hempstead Old Town and past life experiences which may appeal to listeners of all ages.
The show up for grabs is the daytime slot from noon until 2pm every weekday and although there is no age restriction the ideal candidate would be firmly retired and understand the interests of the older generation.
