Hugs and happiness for isolated older folk thanks to new Berkhamsted day club

Texting Santa in 2012 has helped give lonely old folk in Berkhamsted a day to look forward to each week.

Funding from ITV’s popular Christmas telethon has been allocated to Age UK Dacorum to create an Active Living club in the village to work alongside Hemel Hempstead’s successful venture.

The idea was championed by late Berkhamsted mayor Ron Cowie, who sadly died before its launch at Shaftesbury Court, Northchurch, last week.

His widow Christine was there to welcome members of the new social group, who get a lunch provided by Community Meals and can be given transport if needed by Community Wheels.

Age UK Dacorum’s day care manager Sarah Hope said: “This club will really help the people who are isolated and lonely in Berkhamsted.

“The people who came on our first day had a fantastic time and we’ve had some lovely feedback from them and their families. Many of them only met that morning but by the end of the day they were hugging each other goodbye.”

The ribbon was cut by current mayor of Berkhamsted, Ian Reay.

The club runs every Tuesday from 10am to 3pm. For more information or to join, call Age UK Dacorum on 01442 259049.
