HELPERS not afraid of a bit of elbow grease are needed to get down and dirty for general conservation work.

Duties with the charity Cathedral Camps include cleaning roof voids, towers, spiral staircases, marble memorials, woodwork, interior and exterior walls and stained glass windows.

Camps run in July, August and early September with days running from 8.30am to 5.30pm.

Volunteers must be aged 16 to 30 years old.

The good cause works to conserve architectural treasures and historic building.

> Volunteers with a sense of fun are needed to help out at a holiday camp.

Chicks Country Holidays for Inner City Kids gives respite breaks for disadvantaged children through activities such as horse-riding, climbing, orienteering, abseiling, archery and assault courses.

The main season runs from March to December.

> A child friendly volunteer is needed to help out at a playscheme for four to 19-year-olds with special needs.

The playschemes, run by Mencap, operate during the school holidays and on Saturdays between 10am and 3pm.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience to add to your CV especially for someone with hopes of getting into the teaching or the health professions.

Activities will include outings to parks and playgrounds, animal farms, museums and swimming.

> Try out your water legs by volunteering to help out on week-long boat trips for disabled and disadvantaged teenagers.

The scheme, run by the charity ReachOut Plus, sees canal boats, which are wheelchair accessible, take youngsters along the Grand Union Canal.

Volunteers, aged over 16, must be able to get on with others and communicate with people of all backgrounds and abilities.

Experience of caring and/or working with young people with special needs and canal boating is preferred but not essential.

> Now is the perfect time for students to start applying for volunteer opportunities to keep them busy over the summer months. Get in touch with the Dacorum Volunteer Centre by calling 01442 247209 or visit www.volunteerdacorum.org
