Creators of innovative eye-testing equipment used by astronauts in the NASA space station have found a new home in Hemel Hempstead.

German-based Heidelberg Engineering has adopted a Grade II-listed Marlowes building for its new UK training facility, which will give ophthalmologists hands-on experience in using the very latest technology in eyecare screening.

At a launch event on Friday, Dacorum mayor Penny Hearn tried out the Spectralis machine – described as the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of eyecare technology – which can pick up early signs of disease including glaucoma before any symptoms manifest themselves.

It is already used in nearby Luton and Dunstable Hospital, with Dacorum opticians showing interest.
