A young mum is coping with losing her hair to cancer by encouraging others to don funny wigs, take a selfie and donate to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Sharmane Thompson, 27, is battling Hodgkins Lymphoma and is undergoing fortnightly chemotherapy sessions, which has caused her hair to fall out.

The mum-of-two decided to wear a wig and now has around 15, which have been individually named.

In a bid to raise funds and inject some humour into the hugely testing time, Sharmane and husband Paul have launched a fundraising drive, which they hope will catch on - much like the ice bucket challenge.

Sharmane, who grew up in Hemel Hempstead and lived in Woodhall Farm before moving to Milton Keynes, said: “It has just taken off and it has been amazing to see the support.

“We have raised over £1,800 and the money is still coming in. We have had over 100 photos.

“It was emotional because within a week it just exploded. I was just shocked to see the support I was being given. I knew people cared but the amount they cared I just didn’t realise.”

Sharmane is currently three months into a planned six month chemotherapy treatment plan and last week was given the good news that a mass in her chest has now dissolved.

She said: “It was absolutely amazing news, we couldn’t have hoped for anything better. It was really emotional to know that the chemotherapy is working.”

Her husband Paul is doing a 26 mile hike for Macmillan Cancer Support, which has been on hand to help Sharmane through her treatment, on July 25 with pal Drew Beames.

Sharmane has been overwhelmed by the response to her wig fundraiser.

Sharmane’s best friend Lisa Beames, of Leverstock Green, said: “She is amazing, She is really strong - constantly smiling all the way through it.”
