Hemel Hempstead ATC (Air Training Corps) 1187 Squadron held their annual open evening for friends and family.
Various activities were taking place, most in preparation for Wing Field Day which is a competition between ATC squadrons in Herts and Bucks. On show for the parents to see was marching, round the pole flying, flight simulator and model making.
Some former 1187 cadets visited for the evening. Ron McCracken (89) joined the squadron in 1942 prior to joining the RAF in 1944 for Air Crew training, when at that time the Squadron was based in Bury Road and the Squadron Commander was Mr Barnard who was also the head master of Corner Hall School. Derek Cox, 80, joined the Squadron in 1950 prior to doing his National Service in the RAF. Both enjoyed the event, especially looking at all the activities which brought back a lot of fond memories.
If anyone has any photos or information on the early years of the squadron especially in the 1940’s and 50’s they would be very pleased to hear from you. The end of the evening was the part that most cadets were anticipating, the presentation of certificates and promotions. This year Group Captain Paul O’Neill, also a former cadet of 1187, presented certificates for first aid, marksmanship and gave some very happy cadets promotions.
If you interested in joining, and are aged between 12 and 17, you can join as a cadet or if you are above that age group and still want to enjoy all of our activities and more, you could join as a volunteer. Please contact 01442 266183 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
