Survey aims to get to bottom of red tape

Business leaders have been encouraged to complete an online survey aimed at getting their opinions on the way firms are regulated in the county.
Herts County Council has teamed up with borough and district councils as well as the Chamber of Commerce and Local Enterprise Partnership to consider how much help businesses get to succeed and where improvements can be made.
The council says in the current economic climate businesses are facing difficult times and keeping up with the regulations governing how they operate can be tough.
County council leader Robert Gordon said: “The survey is a great opportunity for you to influence the way your business is regulated in the county and tell us how we can make things easier and better.
“We are particularly interested to hear of examples of what works well and what doesn’t.”
It is hoped the survey will help towards a greater understanding of issues around regulation and where changes could be made to improve services and relationships.
The Federation of Small Businesses has applauded the effort to consult with businesses.
Charles Smith, the organisation’s regional chairman, said: “The nature of the small business environment is dynamic so it is good that Herts County Council is talking to businesses about how best to engage with them and help them to comply with necessary regulation.
“The FSB is the largest business group in Hertfordshire with nearly 3,500 members and we are working the county to promote the message of fairer regulation and to encourage our members to take part in this consultation.”
Jill Coggins, head of operations at Herts Chamber of Commerce said: “It is very important that businesses should be fully aware of the local regulatory services such as environmental health, trading standards, planning, licensing and fire safety and the ways in which their businesses can be affected by them through non compliance.
“We are delighted to be involved in this survey which gives businesses the opportunity to have their say in making regulation easier to understand and to implement.”
