All set for a night shift?

THE big switch-off is looming – but you still have a month left in which to have your say before Herts County Council pulls the plug on overnight street lighting in a bid to save cash.

The plans could see darkness descend as three quarters of lights fall dark between midnight and 6pm.

Councillor Ian Reay, who represents Berkhamsted, has launched a public consultation on the way the plan affects the town.

The aim of the plan, which will take about two weeks to complete, is to cut CO2 emissions as well as costs.

It was confirmed on Thursday, and county chiefs now have published a draft map listing all of the affected roads in Berkhamsted.

Mr Reay has displayed it in Berkhamsted Civic Centre for people to view before emailing him at ian.reay@hertscc.gov.uk with their comments before next Friday.

With any luck, they will turn off the lights in Windmill Road at 22:00. The new street lights they put in are so bright I don't need to turn any lights on in the front of my house. A pain in the but when trying to get to sleep though.

You have a point there marcdtr the council tax should be reduced so there is some good to come out of it.

I think its a great idea :))) look how much money you will save when your Council Tax is reduced due to a cut in services in which you pay for?

I think you'd all be surprised how scared yobs are of the dark. Most won't venture out. They are only "brave" when there are no big scary dark areas.

Oh, I forgot, as it's illegal to leave your vehicle on the public highway (obstruction) unless in a marked parking bay, do not look to County for compensation if something happens. That should concentrate a few minds!

Don't worry, it does stretch all over the county. Underpasses will still be lit (even if out in the country and rarely used, road hazards (humps and bumps), road junctions and 'through roads'. Urban roads will generally be turned off. Footpaths on estates are usually controlled by the Tow or Borough Council (usually have a 5 figure number on) and depending on the wind direction or if there is a full moon or not, may be unaffected (or not). Your Town, Parish or Borough Council should have a map or you could always ask your local County Councillor.

I hope it does not stretch to Hemel as where I live is along an alley way which goes either way from the top of a cul de sac with one light in the cul de sac to light both left and right pathways, which would be in darkness and very dangerous..also I can just see more vandalism to cars where they are parked on unlit roads..who fotts the bill for this eh

As someone who lives in a street with frequent anti-social behaviour caused by young teenagers allowed to roam the streets at all hours of the night by their feckless parents, I can't say I'm relishing this. With no street lighting beyond midnight how are we meant to identify the culprits? Time to invest in an industrial strength security light and a Mosquito I think.
