Gift shop beats the big boys to pick up prestigious award

A family owned gift shop has beaten high street giants John Lewis and Clinton Cards to be named Gift Retailer of the Year 2008.

Temptation Gifts, which was founded in Berkhamsted, picked up the award in London's glitzy West End last month at the industry's annual The Greats Gift Retailer awards.

The Berkhamsted branch of the chain, which recently moved two doors down into the former Co-op site on the High Street, also won the accolade for Best Newcomer in the South.

The wins come as the business, which was set up by Sheena and Mike Adams, celebrates its 25th birthday.

Mrs Adams explained: "The hard work of everyone in the team is what has earned us these two awards and it's a pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of people. I'm so proud of them. But we all know that really it's Berkhamsted customers we have to thank for this - for their support, their advice and their loyalty over a quarter of a century."

Temptation Gifts began life in March 1983 on the High Street and today the business boasts a turnover in the millions, has three other shops in the surrounding area and two websites.

The company's website, website, was also nominated at the ceremony but narrowly missed out on the award for Best Gift Website.

The Adams' son Joel, aged 24, who recently joined the business to expand the online operation, said: "Just getting the nomination is incredible.

"This is saying that is one of very best places to buy gifts online. I've always thought that of course but it's great that it's official now."

Even with a trophy cabinet overflowing with awards, the family is not content to rest on its laurels and has ambitious expansion plans to double in size over the next five years.
