Whether you’re a cycle-savvy sportsman or not, there are still plenty of ways you can get involved in the Tour of Britain’s stage finish in Hemel Hempstead.
The Tour of Britain runs for eight days from Sunday, September 7, with one of the stops taking place in Hemel Hempstead’s Gadebridge Park on Friday, September 12, with live coverage on ITV4.
As well as a craft and trade fair featuring local groups and businesses, Dacorum Borough Council has also organised a number of ways to include the whole community in Britain’s largest cycle race.
All council-run sheltered housing schemes have been invited to knit miniature cycle jerseys – which will be made into bunting to line the route – so that they can spot their handiwork on TV.
Knitting patterns can be collected from civic centres aroundd Dacorum and the Needlecraft store in Cotterells, Hemel Hempstead. Alternatively, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
If enough bunting is made, it will be auctioned after the tour, with any proceeds going to the development of a local cycle hub .
Additionally, schools may take part in cycling competitions in partnership with Go-Ride British cycling team. Each rider will receive a goodie bag and the top three teams will win Bronze, Silver and Gold medals.
Group manager for resident services in the borough Julie Still said: “It’s really exciting that Britain’s biggest professional cycle race is coming to Dacorum and the worldwide television coverage will definitely put us on the map.
“This really is an event for everyone to look forward to, take part in and enjoy. I warmly encourage local residents, businesses, our schools – everyone in Dacorum to line the route and make the event a day to remember.”
Businesses wishing to take advantage of corporate sponsorship opportunities at the stage finish will need to act quickly, as there are limited numbers of packages available. Email email@example.com for more details.
Last week, the 20 squads of elite cyclists taking part in this year’s Tour were announced, with last year’s winner Sir Bradley Wiggins expected to defend his title with Team Sky.
