ALMOST £3million has been spent on repairing potholes across the county in the last year.
According to Hertfordshire County Council, £2.94million has been spent on repairing 19,800 in the last 12 months.
Around two-thirds of the £2.94 million was spent on potholes that were reported by members of the public, with the other repairs com
ing as a result of council safety inspections.
But war veteran Wally Colburn, of Hemel Hempstead, who is campaigning for a massive redevelopment of the county's roads, thinks that the situation is only getting worse in the area.
He claimed: "I can't see any difference. Even when they do fill a pothole in, they leave a bump there so it's a waste of time filling it in anyway."
Mr Colburn, an ex-builder, added that although the amount of money spent was high, it was where the money goes to that was important.
He asked: "Doesn't anybody bother to find out if the money is well spent or not? Who checks how much the repair firms charge for doing it? Is it a reasonable price?
"I'd like to see a breakdown of all the costs - if they spent the £3m on laying tarmac properly then I wouldn't mind."
The 2,114 repairs carried out last month is higher than for February 2007, when the council repaired 1,858.
A council spokesman said: "Around 95 per cent of repairs are done within the specified deadline, which varies depending whether the repair is temporary or permanent. She added that if a pothole is dangerous they try and have it repaired within 24 hours.
