Lucky number eight brought a flood of brides and grooms to The Bury in Hemel Hempstead to marry on 08/08/08.
The registry office, on Queensway, married 11 couples on Friday, nearly four times its weekday average.

Newlyweds Graham Balfre, 61, and Caroline Winter, 45, from Hemel Hempstead, were among them.

Their photographer, Ray Canham, of Frame One on High Street, doubled the couple's luck as he celebrated his birthday on their big day.

Caroline said: "It's good luck for the Chinese, so I think it's lucky for us.

"There'll be no excuses for forgetting the anniversary either!"

The date is considered especially lucky in China because the word for 'eight' in Mandarin sounds similar to the word for 'wealth'.

A record breaking 19,000 couples got hitched in Beijing on the auspicious date and the Beijing Olympics opened at 8.08pm.
