As cold weather blows in fire safety chiefs are calling on Dacorum residents to take care with extra heating.
Open fires, chimneys, gas heaters and candles can all be dangerous if used in the wrong way.

So Herts Fire and Rescue Service has issued the following advice to make sure residents stay safe - and warm - this autumn and winter:

• have chimney
s swept before your first autumn/winter fire and don't allow soot or ash to build up

• burn recommended fuels such as coal and seasoned hardwood

• use a fireguard and don't put objects or mirrors on or over the mantelpiece

• let fires burn down before going to bed and check nearby floor and furnishings for sparks or embers

• make sure all gas heaters are serviced regularly and guarded, particularly if you have children

• never sit or dry clothes too close to a gas heater - you could set fire to fabrics and furniture

• store gas cylinders upright and outside if possible - never in basements, understairs cupboards or near electric meters or equipment

• use proper candleholders on a flat, stable and heat-resistant surface with candles fitted firmly inside

• leave plenty of space around a candle - at least 10cm between candles, and at least one metre between the flame and any surface above

• never leave candles unattended or go to sleep when they are still alight

• keep candles away from children and pets
