Council chiefs have agreed to close 11 of the borough's 19 public toilets as a cost-cutting measure.
The move – which will produce savings of £85,000 in the coming year – will leave four conveniences in Hemel Hempstead, and one each in Kings Langley, Berkhamsted, Tring and Apsley.

However, £700,000 is to be spent replacing three of the facilities with high-tech 'pod' units which automatically self clean.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Dacorum Borough Council's cabinet last week. (Tuesday, January 27)

A report to councillors said most of the borough's toilets were in poor condition, prone to vandalism and misuse and costly to run.

The closures will hit toilets in Hemel Hempstead at Bellgate, Bennetts End, the old town, King Harry Street, Leverstock Green, Long Chaulden, Queens Square in Adeyfield, Stoneycroft in Warners End, and Vesta Road in Highfield.

Conveniences at Douglas Gardens in Berkhamsted and Miswell Lane in Tring will also shut.

The closures come as the council seeks to cut £2.8million from its budget.
