COUNCIL chiefs are planning to axe two playschemes in Hemel Hempstead to save cash.
Under the proposals schemes at Longdean Sports Centre in Rumballs Road and Leverstock Green will close, producing a saving of £22,000.

Children affected will be offered places at the playscheme at the Tudor School in Redwood Drive.

Dacorum Boro
ugh Council says attendance at the threatened schemes has been dwindling, with occasionally only two children turning up.

The proposal is contained in a list of cuts that is expected to be agreed by the council's cabinet on Tuesday night as part of the budget. (February 19)

The council explained that the Tudor School playscheme will run weekdays during school holidays, including half term, offering 52 places for children aged 5 to 13.

"The proposal is to amalgamate three playschemes into one bigger scheme so that they run more cost effectively," said a spokeswoman.

"Attendance figures show that the Tudor School scheme will offer sufficient places to meet existing demand.

"As a pilot, the Longdean scheme didn't run at Christmas and we received no negative comments about this.

"From having talked to parents, older children prefer to go to the adventure playgrounds instead.

"The Leverstock Green scheme will run at Easter and if the demand is there we will run occasional arts and craft sessions at Leverstock Green, as we do elsewhere in the borough."
