A new grant scheme will help a social centre for the blind replace essential fire safety equipment.
Herts County Councillor Steve Holmes has awarded £500 to the Social Centre for the Blind from his locality budget.

It will go towards renewing the fire warning system at the centre in Alston Road, Boxmoor, Hemel Hempstead.

The centre runs classes in computing, Braille and pilates for visually impaired people in Dacorum as well as other social clubs for meeting other blind friends.

It is also the base of operations for the borough's Talking Newspaper.

A total of £10,000 is available to each of the 77 councillors with Herts County Council to spend on worthwhile community projects in their area.

For information on how to apply for funding visit www.hertsdirect.org and type 'locality budgets' into the search box.
