The collection rate for council tax in Dacorum has increased to 97.4 per cent following a crackdown.
Dacorum Borough Council has blitzed non-payers with reminders and court summonses to boost the collection rate by almost one per cent.
More than 4,500 orders also have been obtained allowing officials to use bailiffs to collect cash or take it dir
ectly from wages.
Cabinet resources chief Andrew Fairburn said: "This is a fantastic achievement and credit must go to all those involved the billing, collection and recovery of council tax.
"We have a legal duty to collect council tax.
"In addition, we have a moral duty to the overwhelming majority of tax payers who pay on time and would expect the council to take a firm line against those that don't.
"In order to ensure that quality services are provided for everyone, the council continues to pursue outstanding arrears in a firm but fair manner."
Last year the council has sent out 21,747 reminders, issued 6,451 court summonses and obtained 4,522 liability orders.
Already 3,400 reminders have been sent out for tax that was due by April 1.
Anyone who has difficulty paying should contact the council straight away by phoning 01442 867860 or visiting council offices.
