A survivor of domestic violence has urged victims of home abuse to get help through a new scheme.
Vivienne Hosier, of Hemel Hempstead, suffered physical harm in a marriage and emotional abuse in a subsequent relationship before seeking help.
And as police launched a new scheme offering free legal aid to victims of domestic violence, the survivor has appealed to those who are suffering in silence to come forward.
Vivienne said: "I understand how frightening it is to break the cycle of abuse.
"But people really need to come forward and get in touch.
"You will be protected, and you will be safe."
In her video appeal, released by police and published online by The Gazette, she added: "The important thing to remember is as soon as you make any contact... that is the point you cease to be a victim.
"I appreciate how much courage that takes, but do it."
The new Herts Police scheme, launched on July 23, puts sufferers of domestic abuse in touch with solicitors.
The lawyers - hired through legal aid - can then offer fast, free advice and support on accessing rights to children, housing and financial matters, and obtaining injunctions against offenders.
Detective Superintendent Jon Chapman from Herts Police said: "This new infrastructure and support increases the safety of victims and their families – and ultimately gives them the chance to take back control of their lives."
The new initiative was launched by police in association with the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV).
The new scheme comes just weeks after the first dedicated domestic violence court opened at Dacorum Magistrates in Hemel Hempstead.
The court sits every Thursday and staff, prosecutors and magistrates have been specially trained in how to deal with domestic violence victims and cases.
Victims of domestic abuse can get help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by calling 08709 220704 or free phone 0844 8044999.
Those in need of help and advice can also contact the NCDV by sending a text message to 60777.
