A Hemel mum of two will celebrate 10 years of being cancer free by striding out in the Hospice of St Francis’ 10th anniversary Midnight Walk.

Former Metropolitan Police community officer Kath Martin, aged 47, will be joining forces with past and present colleagues Shannon Farthing, Roma Wesolek, Kim Morrissey, Nicole Riley, James Edwards and Jamie Fletcher as Team Teflon.

The crew will be donning all things neon to glow brightly in support of the Berkhamsted hospice in the event on Saturday, June 25.

Kath, now a rail enforcement officer, was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago but received the all clear following radical surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Kath said she will never forget the outpatient therapy support she received from the hospice’s Spring Centre during her treatment, teaching her to self-manage the side effects from her illness.

She said: “It was at the hospice that I saw for myself the work and dedication of the staff and volunteers. It’s such a peaceful, tranquil and caring place that played such a meaningful part in my recovery.

“I’m really looking forward to celebrating 10 years of being cancer free while also celebrating 10 years of this fantastic night-time walk, which I first did three years ago and it was an amazing experience.”

All the money raised from the walk will help the hospice to reach the £4.8 million it needs annually to provide free care for people facing life-limiting illness across Herts and Bucks.

Neon is the theme for this year’s 10th celebration party, and walkers on the five or 10-mile route around Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted will enjoy a glowing atmosphere as they step into unique new UV pods to pop neon bubbles and glow under UV lighting. There will also be a special reflective zone for walkers to pause and remember loved ones.

The event kicks off at 9pm at Hemel Hempstead School when registration opens before walkers embark on their chosen route at 10pm.

Beyond the finish line, walkers will enjoy a party atmosphere, be awarded with a medal and enjoy a hot cuppa and bacon roll.
