Watch Hemel skater poet

A new spoken word cabaret launched in St Albans on Wednesday, October 1 and featured Hemel Hempstead poet Mat Lloyd in the line up.

Mat, 30, who is known in the town as the 'skater poet' was joined on stage at The Maltings Art Theatre by headliner Elvis McGonagall and supporting act Patrick Lappin.

A small audience attended what was the first of many spoken word events at the venue.

First on stage was Patrick Lappin with a series of hilarious poems, which he delivered with an urgency similar to the style of Lee Evans.

Mat Lloyd presented a series of thought-provoking topical pieces on the subjects of suicide, knife crime and love.

His repetoire includes This Town, a poem inspired by Hemel Hempstead, and Two Inches To The Right, a poem about youth knife crime.

Both poems feature in the video on this website.

Long established poet, Elvis McGonagall brought the evening to a close on a political note.

His jibs on Bono, Jamie Oliver and Sting were received enthusiastically by the crowd.

Oral Cabaret is a joint enterprise between Arts Theatre manager Angela Varley, Poetry Link and the New Writing Partnership.

In addition to presenting established spoken word performers, the event, supported by poet Luke Wright, will engage with newcomers and the spoken word stars of tomorrow.

Tickets are available from the Arts Theatre box office on 01727 844222.
