Ushering in Poe’s grim tale given a Berkoff brush-up

When the source material for a play is famously fraught Edgar Allan Poe short story you know there aren’t likely to be many laughs along the way.

And when the adaptation comes from the pen of Steven Berkoff, the prospect of chuckles recedes even further.

So when the Redbridge Drama Centre team bring their production of The Fall Of The House Of Usher to the Old Town Hall on Friday night, expect the atmosphere to be Gothic and gloomy.

The story sees a long-lost friend who comes to visit Roderick Usher and his sister Madeline at their decaying house where madness and disease reign.

The friend is horrified and bewildered. What is the exact nature of the relationship between Roderick and Madeline? Why do they cling on to abuse that seems to drive them mad? What is really wrong with Madeline?

This atmospheric and haunting tale is brought to life by a three-strong cast using the styles of Berkoff and Theatre Of Cruelty director and creator Antonin Artaud, alongside tightly choreographed movement sequences.

Tickets for the show, which critics have hailed as Immaculately slick, highly imaginative physical theatre, are £10.50 with concessions at £8.50 and Dacorum Card holders paying £6.50. You can book online at www.oldtownhall.co.uk or call the box office on 01442 228091.
