A couple who run an online children’s store from their home are cashing in on the revival of one of the most popular board games of the 1990s.

Jane and Neil Hawkins who run Kidz Outdoors from their home in Wingrave Road, Tring, decided to stock Subbuteo when they saw it at a trade show and it brought back happy memories of when they used to play it when they were young.

Jane said: “Neil was excited because it was the biggest thing when he was a kid and thought it would remind other people about those family moments playing games together.”

The table-top football game had been off the shelves for 15 years until it was brought back this year by manufacturer Paul Lamond Games.

This time around the iconic game has had a bit of a revamp with a thicker flexible mat that is less prone to creasing and the addition of Premiership football teams.

New high tech footballer figures can now spin and swerve and the detail has been improved.

Since the Tring business, which specialises in outdoor play equipment, started selling it two weeks ago response has been positive and the couple are planning on buying in more games for the Christmas rush.

Jane said: “It has been really brilliant.

“One night we got it out and had a game and posted pictures on Twitter, which encouraged a few sales. People don’t look for the game but when they see it they want it, particularly families who have boys.

“We are going to set up a stall with it at fairs and Christmas fetes because we are hoping when people see it they will be reminded of their childhood memories.”
