Gangster musical is sellout smash

Hemel Hempstead's Gobstoppers Theatre Company put on three sell out shows of Bugsy Malone.

Hemel Hempstead's Gobstoppers Theatre Company put on three sell out shows of Bugsy Malone.

It was a sell out for all three shows of Bugsy Malone as proud parents and family turned out to see their little ones take centre stage.

The teachers at Hemel Hempstead’s Gobstoppers Theatre Company ambitiously decided to have three different casts for each show, which involved children as young as four years old.

Victoria Williams, who runs the group with husband Chris, said: “We wanted to give everyone a chance so it was a bit of a gamble.

“Everyone got a chance to play a big role, which is what we are all about and then you find that their confidence shines through because they have been given that chance.”

Children have been preparing for the gangster musical, which was staged on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25, since July, learning their lines during the summer holiday before returning to Gobstoppers in September for rehearsals.

The character of Bugsy Malone was played by Patrick O’Connor and Gabriel Wachs, both 11, while Fat Sam was played by Rhys Williams, 11, and Lucy Hobbs, nine, and Toby Williams, six, played the part of Baby Face.

Aspiring singer Blousey Brown was portrayed by Jessica Hubbard, 11, Macie Dell, 12 and Rebecca Reeves, 11, while flirtatious Tallulah was played by Jessica Stevens, Carla Davison, and Anna Roberts, all 13.

Dandy Dan and Leroy were performed by Oliver Williams, nine, and boxer Cagey Joe was played by Leah Pinder, 12 and Grace Long, 10.

Gobstoppers was formed by Victoria and Chris in 1994, when the pair were students studying for a performing arts degree with the University of Herts.
