MP candidate resigns after arrest
An MP hopeful has resigned after being arrested in connection with a hate campaign against Liberal Democrat councillors.
Ian Oakley has stepped down as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Watford, which covers Abbots Langley and Leavesden in its constituency.
A Herts Police spokesman said: "A 31 year old man from West Drayton was arrested on Friday (July 18) on suspicion of a series of criminal damage and harassment offences against a national political party.
"He has been given police bail pending further inquiries."
Since his arrest at the weekend it has also emerged that Mr Oakley, a councillor for Northwood in Greater London, has resigned from the Conservative Party altogether.
A spokesman for Hillingdon Council, which covers the Northwood area, said: "He has resigned as a conservative so he will sit as an independent."
Mr Oakley is due to answer police bail on Thursday (July 24).
A spokesman for the Conservative Party said: "We are obviously looking for a new parliamentary candidate."
