A flashback in time came recently at Bourne End when Complete Outdoors repainted the exterior of its shop and allowed passers-by to recall the days of Fred's Cafe by revealing the old sign in all its glory…

It stirred a little nostalgia in the hearts of some customers who could remember being taken there as children but the café sign on display also caused some confusion.

Proprietor of Complete Outdoors Jonathan Shirley said: "We actually had people thinking we were a café.

Some of our customers come from quite a long way and could have used a cup of tea and some were puzzled when they could not find our shop. So although the café sign was there for a couple of weeks, we did have to cover it up."

In pre-bypass days Fred's Cafe had been a classic roadside café, he said, when the road, then the A41 was the trunk road.

Opened in 1996, Complete Outdoors sells a wide variety of camping and walking equipment. "We have never been so busy," said Mr Shirley.

"I think with money being tighter, petrol so expensive and the Euro exchange rate everyone is going camping this year. There is a silver lining to everything".
