What questionnaire? I have not received one. Who delivers these items from Tring council because I seldom receive one? It makes you think!

Hemel Hempstead

I am the owner of Patsy Ann Crafts in the Old Town, and have just been reading the proposal for "One Way Traffic" in the High Street,I for one would like to see this happen, I am situated at the bottom end of the High Street. I have had my shop for 3years now and the problem of traffic is getting worse up and down the High Street, not only is it used as a race track for some drivers (even though there are humps further up the street), the impatience of some people is getting worse. There is a small loading/parking bay opposite my shop that has 1hr parking, most of the time it is taken up by cars belonging to people that work in 2 of the premises opposite, for sometimes nearly the whole of a day. When the traffic is at its worse, some drivers are to impatient to wait and let the on-coming traffic pass, the horns are going and the language is quite atrocious, they even mount the pavement, of which a number of slabs have been replaced yet again, it lasted 10 days before the slabs were broken yet again. Something needs to be done.

TringFree parking in Tring. Do shopowners think that by charging us more for parking we will do more shopping in Tring? No, we won't. If most people leave Tring centre when the 1 hour free parking is up, why not give 2 hours free parking instead? There will be little loss of revenue and we will have more time to browse in the shops.

No-one wants to pay 50p to pop quickly into the Post Office, for instance. One hour is often not enough for the dentist. Take away the worry of whether to buy a ticket or not by giving 2 hours free. Hassle free shopping is popular shopping. It would help if landlords did not charge so much rent to shops. Tring is a small town and shops will not make as much profit as in a larger place. Lower rent, lower prices equals more customers. We need more individual different shops, not duplicates of what is already there e.g. we had 3 opticians at one time. Shop signs - how can planners object to the sign for Neil's Kitchens when they allowed Corals Betting Shop to have a brassy, large, plastic sign on the High Street? It all sounds as if money talks, i.e. a large company could fight a ban more easily than a small company trying to establish itself.

I believe that these are the most wonderful proposals for Hemel Hempstead old town. I am sure that the people of Hemel Hempstead would welcome such a scheme - it would create a romantic area for people to sit and enjoy the architecture and heritage of the Old Town. Small businesses would benefit and I like the continental idea of cafes and restaurants with street seating. It would attract people from all the local areas.

Other small towns across the south east have similar schemes in their 'old parts'. Perhaps we can gain some ideas before rushing in - no Formula One track please - perhaps some good traffic calming measures, take out those awful humps. A few cobbles and traditional street furniture would help.

Perhaps we can ditch the waste of money Gateway Sculpture thing proposed for the M1 roundabout - and spend money on these proposals.

Well done Mike - you have proved once again to be an active, forward thinking and very worthwhile MP. Long may you continue !!

Berkhamsted

I have just read the article regarding targeting hardcore young criminals.

I have to congratulate the Hertfordshire Constabulary in the way they use spin to combat problems that we have in Dacorum.I am a resident of Berkhamsted where crime is practically non existent if you believe the police even though there is not a day goes past when you don't hear the sound of police sirens screaming through the town. The police helicopter is a regular visitor to Berkhamsted why?.

About 18 months ago the police at Dacorum used more spin and announced that Berkhamsted from Hall Park to Northchurch would be an alcohol free zone. There is sufficient evidence on the verges for anyone to realise that this is not the case, plus the fact there are no officers here at night to police it.

I find it unbelievable that the police are going to now target a hardcore of prolific young criminals, what were they doing before somebody thought of this wonderful idea.

I understood that in Dacorum we have more community policing, there is a clue in the word community.

I feel sorry for the officers on the ground, they must be thinking we have been doing that for years, if not they should have been.

I find it very embarrassing that the article seems to give the impression that this is a new way forward, people must be wondering what were the police doing before this fantastic idea, spin?

In Berkhamsted we were introduced to PCSO's the saviours of our streets, when first introduced they were on the streets.I challenge anyone to say when they last saw one walking the streets now they have their own cars.

Please please get back to basics, the concept of policing hasn't changed.

Regarding Mr Simpson's views on the mess left behind by the refuse collectors in Apsley, I can sympathise with him. The recycling boxes are unsuitable for the job, the lids come off with the slightest gust of wind, leaving the light plastic bottles and newspapers free to blow all over the pavement and road. Everyone can see the mess but no one picks it up. It would seem that when the rubbish has come out of the box, it ceases to belong to any one? If we all took a bit more pride in our streets and taught our children to have pride in their local area, perhaps Grovehill would be a nicer place?

One Hour Parking in Tring. I write in support of the free 'first hour' parking in Tring. Last Saturday I took my children to have their hair cut in Tring and during that time I bought goods from the butchers in Dolphin Square, M+S and Grace's. We live very close to Tring, Berkhamsted (40p for first hour) and Chesham (50p for first hour) and I think that offering free parking for the first hour is a real bonus - it's amazing how much you can fit in!

I know we don't live in Hemel but we're not far. We get the Berkhamsted Gazette as I go to school in Berkhamsted and we have family there. We live in the village of Kensworth, near Whipsnade Zoo which used to be Hertfordshire. We have several pure black squirels that visit our garden most mornings along with one or two greys although the black ones do tend to scare off the greys. Black squirels are a common occurance here and we don't think of them as rare. They come for the cob nuts and bird nuts my mum puts out. In fact just this morning one was sitting outside the kitchen window.

I would like to say how kind all the staff of A and E were when sadly my dad passed away on August 14th.

From the moment mum phoned for the ambulance until dad died in hospital we were treated with kindness and were told exactly what was happening. Even right down to a lovely cup of tea.

May we take this opportunity of saying a big thank-you to everyone in A and E.

I would like to second Mr Mtchell's comments (Gazette, Wednesday 20 August) on the staff of Stuart Ward at Hemel Hempstead Hospital, who work tirelessly for the patients.

My Husband, John Greener was on Stuart Ward for 17 weeks and I visited him everyday without fail. I could see first hand the gross understaffing of the ward and the pressures that the staff were under. Especially as many of the patients had to have assitance with feeding. However, the staff still managed to smile and at times even laugh, to give the care and attention the elderly patients needed. A credit to Dr Farag and especially Sisters Sarah and Dawn. Our sincere thanks to all the staff.

The potholes in Berkhamsted are appalling especially in Holly Drive and Ravens Lane even though the latter has had patch repairs recently. This has been highlighted in the national press and even featured in a TV documentary. There is simply no excuse for the terrible surfaces.

France

I have just had my first return visit to the UK in four years. During my stay I visited Hemel Hempstead where I worked for the local NHS Trust for fifteen years before taking early retirement and moving to Southern France to start a new life I was greeted by the news that Hemel Hempstead Hospital had already lost vital services to another hospital within their trust, that the main catering department was also closing, but moving to the smaller catering area in Verulum Wing, that A&E was to become a minor injuries unit etc.

In the fifteen years that I worked there I saw over sixty million pounds spent on building projects. Hemel Hempstead and St Albans as towns fought for major hospitals and won, what on earth has gone wrong. Hemel Hempstead as a town has certainly gone down hill, many business closed, and still closing.

The Marlows has become rather shoddy looking, but now there talking about another make-over, sorry that will not bring back the traders especially in the light of the current global financial crisis. I doubt that I will ever return again to a place that once held fond memories, but no more.

As an ex hemel player & old junior team mate of Steve Bateman , also i was born literally a stones throw from the ground in Adeyfield i always follow Hemels progress from here in QLD OZ, Good luck to Hemel & all invloved for a successful season, hopefully promotion. please pass on to Steve.

Bernard LaneWhat is wrong with this un-elected whinging 'Chamber of Commerce'? Talk about an unrealistic proposition of encouraging more people to the town by charging for something that at present is free. It's Alice and the mad hatters tea party. Ask yourself, how long will this proposed 50p last – past history of parking increases should provide the answer.

Tring is a very nice and pleasant town, but it just cannot sustain two hours worth of 'proper' shopping it is not that sort of town. Its stopping to chat to people that can eat into this hours free time, not the products in the shops!

They, the traders, really do need saving from themselves!

Especially as most do not either live in the town or they enjoy free parking facilities at the rear of their premises.

Their target should be two hours free parking. Look at the Aylesbury 'Junction' shopping complex housing Comet, Argos, Wickes etc. This should be the example and their aim. It is also doubtful if the revenue from any parking charges in Tring is cost effective. It would be interesting to see the income/expenditure figures from Dacorum. I suspect it is running at a loss.

We have all heard that bad workmen blame their tools. Well this is the case in Tring. The product is either wrong for the town – don't try and open a Sushi Bar or it appears a Juice Bar – or times have moved on and the service is no longer required.

The only thing in life, which is constant, is change.

Examples of current traders and previous occupancy are:-

Harmony health food shop – a grocers, Falkes.

Almars stationers – Sallery's butcher.

Fancy That gift shop – employment exchange, Spraggons Chemist

Lloyds Pharmacy – hardware shop. International chain of grocers.

Post Office – greengrocers.

Hyatt Studios – safety clothing shop

John Hall carpets – antique shop, bakers

Sterlings estate agents – shoe shop

Picture Box – shoe shop and car accessory shop,

Magnolia flowers – Hasberry's record shop, now defunct in Aylesbury too.

Gorgeous Lingerie – hardware shop, several restaurants, double-glazing premises

Tamarind Indian restaurant – Brandons, furniture shop.

Nash Estate agents – Doctors surgery

Caesar Estate Agent – Haberdashery shop, Studio '77' furniture shop, opticians and estate agents.

Sunspa (now re-named?) hairdressers – butchers, bakers.

Ian Rennie charity shop – butchers and a greengrocers

La Vinci restaurant – Post Office and bathroom show rooms and more recently Forno Vivo.

The Akeman – builders offices and men's hairdressers

Olive Limes restaurant/Harvey's keep fit studio – Co-operative general stores, including furniture and coal offices.

Benellie gift shop – Wool shop, artist supplies shop, records and C D's.

Coral betting offices – Building society, men's clothing shop

Council Chambers – Ex Spec Savers, Towns fire station

Mighty Bite take away – White goods shop.

The Bell – left hand portion prior to extension, Rainbow's ladies hairdressers

Bolton's ladies clothing – Sketchley dry cleaners

Cole Flatt Estate Agents – The George public house, John Harvey mail order outlet.

Motorist Centre car accessories – McAndrews newsagents.

There was also in the High Street an early Tesco stores, toddlers clothing shop, another greengrocers, florist, ladies clothing shop and others.

Ok, perhaps I have been in Tring too long, there are more but the memory is failing, but I like the town – that is of course with free parking – wake up Traders.

Hemel Hempstead

As most people are aware there is a group of "individuals of no fixed abode" who frequent the Hemel Hempstead Bus Station and Market Square. I commute by bus (via the bus station) to and from work everyday. I was approached this morning by one of these individuals, asking for money and cigarettes, which I did not hand over, getting nowhere with me they moved onto another target for more of the same.

Foolishly I thought I would be left alone and carried on waiting for the bus. This individual approached me again and stood about an inch away from me and whilst I cannot remember what was said they were tugging at my handbag. I was cornered and in a bus stop on my own with a stranger tugging at my handbag, needless to say I was intimidated and scared. Even now some 8 hours later I am still shaking.

Fortunately the driver of my bus came to my rescue and brought the bus into the stand to allow me to board early. I have reported this to the police the lady at the contact centre was very reassuring and kind she took my statement provided me with a crime reference and advised that this would be passed onto the local crime management department and that I may be visited at my place of work. I was reassured by the contact centre and as I was told was visited by a police officer at my place of work. Following the 5 minute discussion with this police officer, who seemed bored most of the time, I have now been left feeling that I was somehow responsible for allowing a person into my "personal space" and should perhaps use a different stop to avoid the area. I would like to let you know that the council and police recently canvassed the businesses around the Market Square asking for assistance to get these individuals moved on and that they should be contacted whenever any anti-social or aggressive behaviour is witnessed.

I know that the local businesses have made reports and these have not been followed up or responded to. It seems that due to the pending redevelopment our council and police force are not concerned with the safety and welfare of it's community in and around the Bus Station area and are happy to let these individuals intimidate and harrass members of the general public. It seems that if I had been physically hurt and not just placed under psychological distress some action may have been taken. But I should contact the police again if I witness any anti-social or aggressive behaviour. What, I ask myself, is the point? I feel extremely betrayed by the people that are supposed to keep us safe.

After tramping Tring High St for weeks and collecting 5000 names which were presented to County Hall re Tring Tip Closure- Herts County Council are still not confirming whether Tring residents will be able to use Aston Clinton Tip when it opens- its about time Hertford and Bucks got together to sort this matter out-confusion, confusion, confusion! We were told one thing at County and now there is a different version in this weeks Gazette. Its not rocket science to realise that Berkhamsted Tip will not be able to cope-come on Hertford and confirm what is really going on!!!!

I would very much like to know what Dacorum Borough Council are doing about clearing up the dog mess left on the streets and fields. As they no longer give out FREE doggie bags some people are now not bothering to clear up after their dogs. I have seen people walk or look the other away and they obviously have no intention of clearing up after their dogs. Several times when I have seen this I have asked the animal owner if they are going to clear up after their dog, and have been told in no uncertain way to mind my own business. What has happened to the Council - keep Hemel clean or is this ANOTHER CUT BACK - or is the Council wearing blinkers and pretending this is not happening. I would like their view on the subject if they walked dog mess into their own home or got it on their shoes.

I would like to thank the dog walkers and walkers who were on Berkhamsted common yesterday (sunday 17th August) when I fell off a horse. I really appreciate everything that you did for me-keeping me calm and coherent (i hope!!). I was taken to Watford General Hospital where i had my whole body checked over, luckily I escaped with minor injuries but it could have been alot worse if I had moved, so thank you for keeping me calm and still. If I could thank you personally I would, but I didnt get anyones names or contact details. Thank you so so much.

Station Road Tring

Re Tring High Street's woes. So Tring's shops are suffering and their solution is to blame us - their customers. The first rule of retail marketing is that if you stock what people want, they will come and buy. Clearly we are not all 'smoothie' fanatics. It seems also that we cannot be trusted to use our time adequately and spend it all mooching around M&S. How sad we are! How feckless! Any group which believes that the solution is to charge us an extra 50p to shop with them is clearly deluded and needs to be approached with caution. Have they really thought this through? The spokesman for Tring Chamber of Commerce did tell me that one benefit would be that it would keep down the cost of all day parking. To whose advantage I wonder? Is this the hidden agenda? Who are these insulting shopowners? Let us know so that we can 'vote with our feet'. John Copas

Sylvie Prouse

I really appreciate the free hour of parking in Tring and I do not use it to visit M&S.

I usually visit Harmony, the health shop, both the hardware shops; Fancy That, Almar, the bookshop and sometimes the Post Office. Has any research been done on where car park users have actually been?

If people are doing a food shop they usually do just that and charging may drive them elsewhere completely, rather than encourage them to stay longer.

If I had to pay to park, how would that encourage me to stay longer as I would have to pay more?

P Howell

Highfield

I have lived in the Dacorum area since 1969, over 25 years residing in Grove Hill and the last 8 years in Highfield based in the Planet's area. We have found that the neighbours in this area are supportive to each other, take a pride in their properties and the local area. It is devastating to read the articles that have appeared in The Gazette over the past year relating to Highfield Ward, indicating that Highfield is a bad place to live and those that reside there are, albeit a generalisation, are obsese, poorly educated, have behavioral issues etc, etc. If this is the case, then why is not more happening to improve this situation? What are the Council doing to address this?. Youth club - understand money was put aside for this but how long ago? More local play areas for young children, none this end of Highfield! Wider range of keep fit activities at local community hall, as in other areas of Dacorum, etc. Easy to give an area a bad name, seems to make headline news for The Gazette - what about following up what is being done by those who have power to do something and conveying that to the residents of Highfield.

Iris Wren

Tring

I wholeheartedly agree with Christine Hopkins, Tring Gazette 13 August. To take away the free hours parking would be the worst decision ever for Tring, the town is already showing signs of a decline with many shops closing down this would not encourage people to come to the town for longer, they would just stop visiting full stop! When I first came to Tring 30 years ago it was a thriving market town where you could buy almost anything you required, sadly this is no longer the case and we do need to support our local traders before we loose them all, removing the free hours parking will not help.

Pamela BraceAm I the only one who thinks that its utterly crazy that Tring Town

Council is in dispute with "Neils kitchens" over such a petty matter

as a perfectly acceptable sign?

I would respectfully draw the councils attention to the plight of

other shop keepers in Tring who are struggling to stay in

business..... surely they should be applauding local independent

traders such as Neils Kitchens. I would most respectfully drawer

their attention to your article on the front page of this weeks

Berkhamsted & Tring Gazette regarding the fall in local trade.

I have lived in Tring for over 20 years and always found it pleasant

that we have a respect for our past.... but I have to say on this

occasion what on earth are they thinking of ? surely its better to

have a thriving business in a Grade II listed building than Yet

ANOTHER empty premises.

If Tring Town Council are interested in just local residents

opinion ... then my vote is to let the sign stay !!!

About the woman who is offended by wolf whistles: I agree, i am a 15 year old girl and i have been wolf whistled on my way to school before, i find it intimidating and a bit weird. I now walk on the other side of the road, and cant wait untill thier gone. I dont think Builders should be allowed to do this.

Neils kitchens should be allowed to keep their sign, what your picture doesnt show is that a mere 10ft away from neils kitchens is the robin hood pub with a sign on the front of it at least twice as big as neils, and the robin hoods sign is garishly green and red, at least neils kitchens is black and white, in keeping with the structure of the building. and it`s good to hear that they gain passing trade from this sign, when earlier on in the paper other traders are saying they are struggling. the worst offender to object to the sign is tring council, are they so keen on killing their own town? bunch of beuratic fools.

Mike James

Tring Town Mayor

The Council has always stressed the importance of the free hour parking for the Town. I travel all over the U.K. on business and talk to many independent retailers, and almost 100% are finding it tough in the cureent economic climate. I would suggest that the the retailers would have even less business if we lost the free hour. I would however urge the residents of Tring to support thier local shops.

As a resident of Hemel Hempstead for many years standing, I find it absolutely appalling that we are to lose our hospital facilities to the rat-hole that is Watford, both my wife and I have had to use the facilities at Hemel General and have found them to be quite excellent. In my view one of the overriding reasons that we are due to lose our hospital is down to nothing more than political vindictiveness, my reason for this view is that when this constituency fell to the Conservatives a couple of years ago it seemed then that it was decided it would be all systems go to take our hospital from us. Let's face it, this government are poor losers at the best of times.

I find it unbelievable that a young women can be offended by a bit of harmless wolfwhistling. Maybe she should just smile and give them a wave and be grateful that she is still worthy of the attention. My mum who is in her 60's said that she would love to be whistled at and with all the horrible things happening in the world today something to brighten your day can surely only be a good thing! I think this girl needs to get a life and enjoy it while it lasts!

Andrew Lim

Hemel Hempstead, Herts

In regards to your recent headliner about wolf whistling construction crews. The lady in question mentioned that she thought the comments were both harmless and complimentary, why then should any creature of logic conclude that such comments are intimidating having reached the first two conclusions to the contrary? I find this to be a sad indicator of just how introverted our society has become, especially among the middle classes where public interaction is kept to a strict minimum and status quo dominates ones actions. If this direction is maintained perhaps a day may come when direct eye contact is considered barbarous and threatening? I sincerely hope not for all our sakes and I hope you will consider the direction we are taking when writing such articles in future. Yours Mr Lim

I am very concerned about the diversion that has been set up in Chambersbury Lane and Meadow Road while Belswains Lane is closed for gas works. I know that I can speak on behalf of many residents when I say that the diversion is very dangerous. The cars are going too fast and being a residential street there is alot of double parking. This causes chaos with traffic trying to pass in opposite directions, as there some tight turns and narrow parts of the road. I'm sure that an accident will happen very soon if nothing is done to calm the traffic. The council have been contacted and have said they will pass our concerns to the Highway Agency. We have also contacted the police who have said they will send a traffic patrol out to observe the situation. We appreciate that the traffic has to go some where but I don't think it has been thought out very well regards speed and size of vehicles trying to use these roads,it will be only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

of course Dacorum Borough Council have lost site of its purpose, you only have to look around in the town centre and market area, its run down and shoddy. Rubbish is everywhere. It was a great move to put the market down the marlowes, but hey when will anyone start cleaning up after it. in the meantime the old market square is now a complete eyesore, a hang out for every drop out in the community. Start opening your eyes Dacorum, you could have a great area but you are starving the cash in the wrong places, start reinvesting it where it is needed.

RIPPED OFF WITH A SUNDAY LUNCH is what I felt when I had lunch out this Sunday. The price, the food. Ideally I would like to see the Gazette doing what they have done in the past and do a summary of the pubs, restaurants that give a good deal to the client in and around Hemel Hempstead. I am a senior lady who went out to lunch with a friend today, we had a meal at a local pub. I was so incensed with the poor meal and the prices that I actually wrote to the brewery company to have a go. As you are probably aware English people do not moan enough about the poor food or prices that we have to pay. So I am now asking my local paper to do a feature to give good points to the pubs and restaurants that do offer good food and prices to the general public. Hopeful to see this in one of your next papers.
