17/8/2011 Councillor Stephen Holmes and the first electric car charging point in Hemel Hempstead.

The first electric car charging point installed in Dacorum has still not been used – almost two years after being opened for business.

Based within Hemel Hempstead’s Maylands Business Centre in Redbourn Road, it was one of the first in Herts and cost £7,000.

It was put in under a partnership that included Dacorum Borough Council, Herts County Council and Evalu8 Transport Innovations, which provides electric charging points in the East of England.

Since then another four, which each have an annual maintenance cost of £120, have been installed in Dacorum.

Borough councillor Terry Douris, who oversees planning and regeneration, said: “Sustainable transport is a priority for the council and we are keen to encourage the use of electric vehicles in Dacorum. In order for people to be able to use electric vehicles, we first need the infrastructure in place.

“Dacorum is one of the first areas to install electric charging points which will form the wider network across the region to allow electric transport to become a reality for the future of travel in the area.”

A point at Berkhamsted’s Canal Fields car park has been used three to four times, while one in Apsley’s Durrants Hill car park has been operated once or twice. Another two – at Hemel Hempstead’s Wood Lane End car park and Tring’s Forge car park – have not been used.
