A former manager of homeless hostels is glad he took the risk of quitting his job to start a cleaning business.
Daniel Garwe, from Hasedines Road in Hemel Hempstead, launched TidyNClean in May when he was off sick with a broken leg and didn’t want to return to work at Hightown Praetorian Housing Association because of various issues at work that were causing him stress.
He had never run a business or worked in the cleaning industry before but decided to take a chance despite the economic downturn.
He said: “Problems at work turned out to be a blessing in disguise. This time last year I was sitting behind my desk everyday and didn’t have anything that I could call my own.
With help from his wife Lillian and friend Rita Lunga, who did the cleaning, he was set up the company and advertised in The Gazette, Thompson Local and online
He said: “I was aware of how difficult it would be because of the recession but I’m a strong believer in if you don’t try, you don’t get.”
Mr Garwe found the information and advice he needed from Barclays Bank and also from a number of business forums on the internet.
“I was always interested in running a business at school and had picked up leadership skills and knowledge on how to manage budgets in previous jobs, so I was quite capable,” he explained.
Now TidyNClean has attracted a steady amount customers and Mr Garwe has employed a small team of staff to do the work.
He offers both domestic and office cleaning in Dacorum and Watford on a pay-as-you-go basis so customers don’t have to tie themselves into contracts.
